The Original Detroit Can Company was founded in 1890, according to an article in the The Detroit Free Press, describing "a crying necessity" for a local source of metal paint and varnish cans. The American Can Company was formed in 1901, and acquired the Detroit Can Company located at 1400 Trombly, Detroit. Over 120 years later, the new Detroit Can Company was proudly formed to introduce an exciting new concept in gift giving.
